Switched Capacitor Circuit: an Emerging Alternative to the DC Power Interconnections
讲座人:Prof. DENG Yan,College of Electrical Engineering, Zhejiang University
讲座摘要:
Along with the revolution in human energy supply, electric power generation and distribution are more and more critical, which are pretty much coupled with the clean and renewable energy. For the common electric power sources, loads and storage, most of them are with the DC external characteristics, leading to the increased DC power conversion. It enhances the DC components’ flexibility in the AC grids and even introduce the final substitution of DC grid in potential.
In the modern micro-grid establishment, the power electronic components /equipment play the key roles which are usually named with phrases such as IBPS (Inverter Based Power System) in AC grids, on the other hand the DC ones, either in current situation or in the future, depend entirely on power electronic interconnections. Almost all the power electronic inter-connectors follow a single fundamental principle of the switching mode power conversion, with the key feature of no theoretic energy loss.
Typical switching mode power converters always contain passive components including both electric field energy storage components, the capacitors, and magnetic field energy storage components, the inductors, between which the semiconductor power switches deliver energy losslessly. As well known, it is not easy for the power magnetic elements to reduce their volume, weight, cost and meet the challenges in power integration, among all the mentioned power components. This can be also considered as one of the technical factors for the limited breaking through of power electronics in many areas.
Actually some unconventional DC-DC converters have kept working for a century with the name of switched capacitor circuit (SCC), or charge pump, which can be operated in switching mode without any magnetic components and remarkable loss. For quite a long time they are restricted within the very specified applications such as chip level micro power supply or less regulated ultra-high voltage and tiny current loads. Only after bottle necks vanished or weakened by the technological progress, SCCs can be expanded to the much higher power range such as several hundred watt to MW, which means an emerging alternative for the DC conversions with the technical advantages like power density and cost-effectiveness.
The proposed tutorial would like to provide a relatively comprehensive introduction for the SCC technologies for the beginners, along with the recent research results from the academy and the speaker’s group for the advanced researchers. Wish it can be beneficial and inspiring for the DC power conversion practitioners.
