Title:Bio-Inspired Microgrids: Bridging Neuroscience and Renewable Energy Systems

Abstract:
The future of energy systems lies at the intersection of biology, engineering, and digital intelligence. This keynote explores how principles from neuroscience and biological systems can inspire the next generation of resilient, adaptive microgrids for applications ranging from smart cities to space exploration.
Drawing on decades of pioneering research in AC/DC microgrids, distributed energy storage, and hierarchical control, the talk presents how concepts such as neural networks, self-organization, and cognitive adaptability can be translated into robust control architectures for energy networks. The talk highlights real-world implementations in maritime, aeronautical, and space environments, including electrical ships, seaports, aircraft, and lunar bases.
Attendees will gain insights into:
- Integrating neuroscience and energy engineering for smarter, self-healing grids
- Advances in distributed control, digital twins, and cybersecurity for critical infrastructure
- The role of artificial intelligence in future-proofing energy systems
- Case studies from microgrid deployments in remote communities, vessels, and extraterrestrial habitats
This keynote invites engineers, researchers, and policymakers to envision a future where energy systems learn, adapt, and thrive—just like living organisms—ensuring sustainability and resilience in a rapidly changing world.

Biography:
Prof. Josep Maria Guerrero Zapata is currently a professor at Aalborg University in Denmark and the director of the Microgrid and Renewable Energy Center at the Huanjiang Laboratory. He has been actively involved in the field of microgrids and renewable energy systems for a long time, possessing significant academic influence and appeal globally. He serves as the editor-in-chief of "Power and Energy Systems" and as an associate editor for four IEEE academic journals, including "IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics," as well as a member of the editorial boards of 14 other journals. He has authored nine monographs and published approximately 1,200 high-level academic papers, with an H-index of 166 and a total citation count exceeding 130,000 (from Google Scholar data). He has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics for ten consecutive years and ranks first globally in terms of citations in the field of microgrids. In 2021, he was elected as an academician of the Danish Technical Academy (equivalent to the National Academy of Engineering), and in 2015, he was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has received numerous prestigious awards from international academic institutions, such as the Villum Investigator, the IEEE Bimal Bose Award, the IEEE PES Douglas M. Staszesky Distribution Automation Award, and the IEEE Modeling and Control Technical Achievement Award.
