讲座主题:Fulfilling the Destiny of Integrated Machine Drives

讲座摘要:
The time is approaching when a major share of all electric machines used in industrial, commercial, residential, and transportation applications will be “smart” machines with their power electronic drives and controls built inside their enclosures. This is already happening in some major applications. Since there are major advantages in mass, volume, and efficiency that IMDs deliver in the applications that have already adopted them, what are the obstacles that are preventing them from dramatically expanding their market penetration today? This tutorial explores the past, present, and future of integrated motor drives (IMDs), providing attendees with broad perspectives on the current state of integrated motor drive technology as well as important insights into its future. Examples of successful IMDs and the latest generation of IMD products and research prototypes will be highlighted together with a frank discussion of the technical barriers that still remain to be addressed in order for IMDs to dramatically broaden their adoption. Attendees will be encouraged to get actively involved in overcoming these barriers so that future IMDs will truly fulfill their destiny, making the world a better place for everyone.
作者简介:
Thomas M. Jahns received his PhD in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978. In 1998, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison, as a Grainger Professor of Power Electronics and Electric Machines, where he served as Co-Director/Director of the Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium (WEMPEC) for 14 years from 2007 to 2021. Prior to joining UW, he worked at GE Corporate Research and Development in Niskayuna, NY (USA) for 15 years. Since his retirement from the active faculty in 2021, Dr. Jahns is continuing to pursue research as a Grainger Emeritus Professor in the areas of high-performance permanent magnet synchronous machine drives using wide-bandgap power switches, and integrated motor drives using modular topologies to achieve high fault tolerance. Dr. Jahns received the 2005 IEEE Nikola Tesla Technical Field Award and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the IEEE Industry Applications Society in 2011. He has served both the IEEE Industry Applications Society and Power Electronics Society (PELS) as a Distinguished Lecturer. Dr. Jahns is a Past President of PELS and served two years as Division II Director on the IEEE Board of Directors (2001-2002). He was elected as a member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2015 and selected as the recipient of the 2022 IEEE Medal in Power Engineering.
Jiyao Wang received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2010, and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI, USA, in 2015. From 2016 to 2020, he was with Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, MI, USA, where he contributed to product development of electric motor control and drive systems for Ford and Lincoln production electrified vehicles, including the F-150 Hybrid, the Aviator Hybrid, and the Mustang Mach-E. In 2021, he joined the School of Electrical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, China, where he is currently a Professor and Head of the Department of Electrified Transportation, a new undergraduate major launched in 2023 by the Ministry of Education of China. His research interests include control algorithms for robotic joints, electric traction drive control, and the design of fully integrated electric machine drives.
